Ok, here's a weird one for you (or maybe not).

Getting around an obstacle

Forums:
We have occasional need to get around an obstacle such as a hill in our portable operations.  2.4 ghz.
A simple approach would be to use a portable node with a 15 dbi omni off to the side, and that might work.
Or we could try a Rocket with 2 directional antennas.  Comments and suggestions?  Thanks!

Value of Remote Control via Mesh

Forums:
I just want to point out explicitly the value that remote control of radios via the mesh can have.

It is unlikely that locations like EOCs will have antennas and radios as powerful as local hams have at their home stations.
So if we can just use a PC at the EOC to remotely control a home station over the mesh (in the absence of the Internet), we can achieve
great communications capability from the EOC.  I have seen a demonstration of this, and it is just as if the home radio was in the EOC.

PtP links using standard firmware vs AREDN MESH

Forums:
Posted on behalf of Doug Reed, N0NAS.

I can understand the advantage of using a Mesh network on a random
omni network for local coverage. But I've never understood what
advantage it gives us over long range point to point links. Has anyone
seen mention of this issue or can explain why it is not better to
stick with the original TDMA protocol for the long links? I'm not
looking to argue, I'm looking for a authoritative technical answer,
something better than "because we want Mesh."

How to determine which path is being used?

Forums:
Is it possible to determine which path is being used between two nodes?
Does the OLSR information tell that?   If so how do I read it?
Of course it world be VERY useful if we could TELL the node which path to use. I understand that is
being worked on.  Thanks!

Minimizing the setup weight and profile for power

Forums:

Thought y'all might be interested in my homebrew power distribution I just completed today. I had four goals -

1 - First and foremost - since I also have an active music band, setup load and weight is a huge consideration, always looking to reduce weight and bulk. Same principle in portable mesh deployments.

2 - Build a power distribution system that I could use for two primary purposes
     A - AREDN portable node
B - Our band's events, on-stage power (eliminate the 9V batteries and consumption at every gig - expensive)

Backhaul or no Backhaul?

Forums:
Hello all,
I am with the K7MSH Utah Amature Radio Mesh club in Central Utah.  We currently have 3 mountaintop nodes with M2 Rocket/Sectors at each site.  The only thing linking them are users in the valley that can see at least 2 of the mountaintop nodes.  The question I have is if it's conducive to have them linked with 3 or 5 ghz.  My understanding is that by isolating the two mountains with another band will help with the hidden node and packet collision/retry issues.

ToughSwitch POE

Forums:
I currently have a Rocket M2 XM and Nanostation M2 powered by a ToughSwitch 5 port. Using Ubiquiti cable, I have a 45' run to the Rocket and a 20' run to the Nano. I went to the site today to deploy a Rocket M5 XW on a 120 degree sector. This configuration of nodes had all been bench tested and worked. At deployment, all three nodes powered up however the following occurred:
