Question about Radio Mobile link

Forums:
Hi,
This is my first attempt at this. A ham a few miles away has expressed an interest in linking with M3s. I think I already know it's not going to work at 11 miles given our elevation, but I do want to complete the exercise so I know how this works - and can start looking at the alternatives with nearby office buildings.

Logging in

Forums:
Well, so far I have changed the stock firmware to the 5.5.11 version and used that to flash the AREDN firmware into my Ubiquiti Nanostation. I was able to go to the setup screen using username root and password: hsmm. I made the mods according to the book so that I'm now a mesh node KB1HTO. I changed the username and password and the distance setting on the setup screen and clicked the Saved Changes button. Eventually, it rebooted the Ubiquiti and the 4th LED blinked and stopped blinking.

Set up instrux?

Forums:
Getting a NSM2 this week and will be test connecting to the UTD AREDN this weekend.

As far as set up, do I start here: http://www.aredn.org/content/software

and select "Factory" on Nanostation M2?

Then, do I follow instructions from here: http://www.k5dlq.info/2014/12/27/quick-start-guide-to-bbhn/
?

Thanks and 73,

Estimating 5 GHz s/n from 2.4 GHz s/n data

Forums:
We have an operational mesh network among several 911 towers at 2.4 GHz.  We are considering installing a 5 GHz backbone.

I would like to estimate the 5 GHz s/n based on the known 2.4 GHz s/n, which ranges from 20 to 30 db on various links.

At 5 GHz, we have an additional 6 dB free space loss, since the frequency is twice as high.

The gain of all the current tower antennas is 13 dBi.

If we put 31 dBi dishes at the towers at 5 GHz, we gain 31-13 = 19 dBi.

Second Switch VLAN config question

Forums:
I have a GS015E in the shack, configured per the recommendations, and it works perfectly.
I have two nodes at the top of the shack.  One is my default gateway via a network cable to the shack at to the GS105E.  I'd like to deploy a Toughswitch at the base of the tower to convey all VLAN traffic from both nodes back to the shack transparently supporting the default gateway and DtD traffic.  How do I configure the Toughswitch ports?

Thanks.

Map 2.0

Forums:

It would really useful if one could see the LINKS in addition to the nodes that are running AREDN.  This requires figuring out what to do about mesh groups that do not have any Internet connection.  But 10 nodes on 5 different bands in my basement - while impressive - is not as useful as a single pair of nodes with 30 miles in between them.  It would be really useful to see these links on a map - then others would have some idea if they might be able to join in.

Restricting access to WAN Gateway

Forums:
I have a WAN gateway set up on my mesh both to provide broadband to my repeater site for IRLP and Echolink as well as to provide a tunnel. Is there a way to restrict the access on this to certain nodes and not others?

24VDC UPS?

Forums:

I'm using a Ubiquiti ToughSwitch (5 port) to power my nodes.  It's powered by a 24VDC brick, and I'd like to replace that with some sort of "UPS" to get through power outages.  Any recommendations?

Node Performance

Forums:
Good Morning:

I had an interesting situation as our Inland Empire mesh builds out. Our current hub if you will is a Rocket M2 with a 120 degree sector located atop a water tank at the highest point in town. The majority of nodes looking back at it are NanoStation M2 that are within 2-5 miles of the tank location. One user, approximately 2.5 miles out has a RocketDish M2 pointed back. Until just recently, all were seeing good performance despite a couple spots having less than optimal line of site to the tank.

Error System.IndexOutOfRangeException

Forums:
First off I would like to say hello to all.

I am receiving the following error on my bullet
Error: System.IndexOutOfRangeException: Index was outside the bounds of the array.
   at aredn.Form1.ParseVersion(String ubString)
   at aredn.Form1.btnTest_Click_1(Object sender, EventArgs e)

When running the AREDN u-Boot Tester.

I checked the version of the Bullet and it is XS2.ar2316.v4.0.1.4978.111219.2121.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated thanks

Gary
