Manual configuration

Forums:

I am pretty sure this topic has come up before. But, if I recall correctly, there never was a definitive answer.

Are there instructions for configuring a newly flashed (or prior to saved saved settings) upgraded node from the command line (ssh or telnet)?

debugging olsrd

Forums:

Is there a way to determine why olsrd is not sharing routing information with a neighbor.  Case in point:

I see the neighbor's IP address and good LQ (~90%). But, the IP Address never resolves and the NLQ remains at 0. I am fairly sure the issue is due to a changed olsrd_secure_key on the neighbor. The question is how can I prove that, or, if that is not the issue, find other information from my side?

"Mesh Gateway" and lack of VLAN Tagging Support

HELP - Lost connection after upgrading

Forums:
After Upgrading I lost communications with my Bullet M2:

I tried to upgrade a Ubiquiti Bullet M2 from a 3.15.1.0b2 version to the current version. I used the following instructions someone gave me:
“If you are currently running 3.15.1.0b01 or 3.15.1.0b02 and plan to do an Over the Air (OTA) upgrade to "keep settings" when uploading 3.15.1.0b04, the process is as follows:
1) install the patch: "AREDN 3.15.1.0b* OTA Fixup"

Firewall in wan gateway

Forums:
a discussion has come up about use if the wan gateway feature. While there is general concern about allowing general traffic from the mesh to the Internet. There are also some specific advantages. One specific benefit is the ability to access the aredn site for software updates and packages.  Thus the question has anyone tried tried using the openWRT firewall to create a rule set to allow outbound traffic to a specific site or sites?

First Attempt - Can't Mesh

Forums:
Hello all,

Trying to mock-up our first mesh system here.  Using  Bullet M2s. We've got 2 of them in one room, each connected to a computer.  The firmware flashed just fine, on each M2, and when we do a WIFI scan with the AREDN Node Status screen, we SEE the other station (from each computer).  However, when we check the "Mesh Status", we can NOT see the other stations .... if doesn't appear that they are "meshing".

At a loss at this point.  We believe we've followed the instructions explicitly but can't seem to get it to work.

ETXs change when tunneling

Forums:

I have a number of nodes remote to me with typical ETX of 5-6.  I've noticed that when I enable the tunnel down to Don, KE6BXT, those ETXs go up substantially, in some cases doubling.   That doesn't seem right.  Any ideas?

---------------------- EDIT---
I just realized rain has moved into the area.  I'll watch it until the storm moves through and see if they come back up.

Auto create /etc/hosts file of mesh nodes

Forums:
I have a computer (MacOS 10.11)  that connects to both my home network (with Internet gateway) and the mesh network. I have no problem with packet routing - that was easily resolved by adding a static route for 10.0.0.0/8. The problem now is DNS. There are a number of options, most of them fairly complex and involve adding a separate DNS server for selective forwarding. So, given the relatively small size of the local mesh, I have just been manually maintaining /etc/hosts entries for the mesh entities (nodes and services).

Internet Gateway

Forums:

I know that if you tick the box for a node to act as an internet gateway then anyone that connects to any node on the mesh will then be given internet access through that node, or a best calculated route to the best gateway when more than one node is a gateway.

But... what I want to do is slightly different.

I want to set up a portable node at a remote site (irrelevant) with a laptop connected. Then, through some protocol, that one and only laptop gets internet access somehow.

Why automatic 10-net addressing?

Forums:

I'm still scratching my head a bit about the use of automatic 10-net addressing.  It seems counter-productive for everyone using 10-net addressing at their local sites and requires NAT basically everywhere that want to connect to resources on the mesh (unless someone was only using 192.168/16 or 172.16/12 address space).  Perhaps it is my disdain for NAT in general whenever avoidable, or just the whole "KISS" mindset I try to have.
