Tunnels and ETX metrics

Forums:
I've noticed that when I have a tunnel enabled, all the ETX metrics to my remote nodes at least double.    Why is that?

DIY - Portable Mesh Node with VOIP and Wifi

Forums:

I have put together a HOWTO on my blog for building a portable mesh node with VOIP and wifi. We use this setup at church buildings to get on the mesh where we can't install any equipment long term. It uses VOIP so anyone who knows how to use a phone can use it. Great little kit and not too difficult to build.

Minor firmware annoyances

Forums:

Let me preface this by saying great firmware, dev team! MJARS has 6 nodes up in SE Tarrant County now (Dallas-Fort Worth area). Waiting for a calm day so our tower climber can put up a 7th. Also, short range plans are for 2 PTZ weather cameras. But I have a couple minor firmware annoyances to address: As I scan around the mesh and look at the various status pages I notice that after viewing a page in auto mode, users are clicking 'quit' before clicking 'stop', which leaves that node in scan mode even after leaving the page, unnecessarily consuming that node's resources.

Configuration Standard?

Forums:
Someone had posted a draft of a local configuration standard a month or so ago.  Not wanting to invent the wheel, I thought I'd snag a copy of it.  But can I find it?  Noooo...  Can someone point me at it?

Thanks.

Elevation angle with sectors, maximum range

Forums:

I'm curious what those deploying sectors have found their effective distances are?

Consider a deployment site 3,000 ft up with a clear LoS to a valley below, 80 miles wide (aka, San Joaquin Central Valley), using a Rocket M5 and one of these 90 degree 20dbi sector antenna:

Linking multiple Nanostations over Ethernet

Forums:
I want to put 4 Nanostation Ms at my house - 2 Nanostation M2s(north/south facing) and 2 Nanostation M5s (north/south facing). Each one is running 3.15.1.0. I would like to have them all connected to each other via Ethernet, so they can route amongst each other. I tried a few combinations of connecting the nodes' secondary ports together, both via a dumb switch and via a crossover cable. I tried the same two things on the primary ports. None of the 4 combinations seemed to do anything.

Mesh Network Guidelines

Mesh Network Guidelines, March 16, 2016

Rod Fritz WB9KMO, rod@sbatv.org

These guidelines were prepared for the Superstition Amateur Radio Club in Mesa AZ. I hope you find them informative and useful.

The guidelines are intended to maximize mesh network success while minimizing interference. It may be appropriate to modify the guidelines as we accumulate input and experience.

Can anyone comment on relative functionality wrt AREDN of:

Forums:

QTH setup utilizing a 5 Port Toughswitch (with connected airGateway) vs AirRouterHP(s)  each (both) connected to ISP's ADSL modem/router via Cat 5e or Cat 6 to provide the necessary 'Internet Access' for installing and configuring Tunnel Services and exploring Gateway use for SIP and ownCLoud Services and permitting access from anyplace in/around QTH within wifi range on a separate SSID , keeping AREDN activities separated from everything else that might be going on here?

Anybody have a favorite POE injector for nominal 12v systems?

Similar situations,
1.) Solar w/battery sourced DC
2.) Vehicle supplied 12v or any other power supplied via emergency 12v battery source.

Linux (Ubuntu), NAT, DNS resolution hints?

Forums:
Hi all -- can someone provide some hints, or pointers to a document, which would describe how to best configure a Linux box to property resolve DNS names from *.local.mesh?

The limitation is that I am running in NAT mode on my home network (due to 2 dozen or so machines which do not want to be on the 10.x network, need for Internet from this Linux mesh-connected service node, etc.).
