Lightning and LQ?

Forums:

All,

Out here in Southern California we don't often get lighting strikes, but in other places of the country I know they are very common.

So a question for those who are in lighting prone areas. I know I've seen lighting affect Cable and DSL links (DSL especially) and HF bands, I can't recall if it affected my cellular link or not, so haa anyone ever looked during a storm to see if the LQ of the links goes down more than just during a rain storm of similar magnitude?

Routing Loop guidelines?

Forums:

Any general recommendations on how to avoid routing loops?   (And in a mesh network, what's considered a loop and what's considered an alternate path)?

Thanks

Part 97 for 2.4 GHz equipment?

Forums:

I heard that the Ubiquiti equipment could be persuaded to move down into the Part 97 portion of the 2.4 GHz band, and that that ability might eventually show up in the AREDN firmware.

Is that correct?  If so, a rough time frame would be really helpful for network planning (I.e., if it's 6 months we do one plan; if it's 24+ months, that's a whole 'nother plan).

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Co-located nodes

Forums:

Anyone with IEEE publication access to summarize the following paper for the rest of us?    This has relevance for those of us considering and putting up co-located nodes.    ...OK, so how "serious" is the cross-channel interference?  Did this paper quantify?  Did they test with any sort of shielding, etc.?      Presumably, newer devices and chipsets have gotten better.  This is a 2007 paper.

Surge Protection

Forums:

I'm looking around to select options for cat5 Surge Protection--hardened tower site not easily accessible.   Anyone have any particular cost effect devices to recommend?  I see in earlier posts in our community people have recommend.

SNMP for mesh nodes?

Forums:

I've installed the snmpd package on my local Ubiquiti node, but can't seem to figure out where the configuration file, snmpd.conf should reside.

Any pointers would be appreciated!

Command Line code updates?

Forums:

In six months or so, I see me managing up to a couple dozen nodes.  It would be tedious updating all of those via the GUI.

Is there any mechanism in place to do that via command line so it can be done programmatically?   scp & reboot, or something?   tftp?

Thanks.

Sector antennas... considerations?

Forums:

Hi All, I am attempting to pioneer a mesh for my rural area. As part of this task, I am looking at installing sector antennas and mesh nodes on the club-owned repeater tower and maybe a couple commercial towers. I will also likely have a set of sector antennas on a small tower on my hilltop.

ch -2 success and growing in Orange County

Forums:

We are seeing a growth in users coming online in Orange County, CA.    Here is a screen shot of the neighbor nodes.   The growth is introducing the kind of problems we want to have, performance tuning.   This node is at a high site overlooking the County and we are starting to see most nodes that come on line upwards of 15+ miles, even some that are pointed in the wrong direction with bounce.  Most all of these nodes also have a 5Ghz (and 3Ghz) path as well, hence we know and see some "0%" NLQ (% of olsr packets that node sees from us).
