IP Phone EMCOMM Deployment - Event Support

Forums:
I have used IP Phones to support some of our public service events in the past, but yesterday we put a new "twist" on the use of our phones.  In this situation, we only needed point to point backup comms between our communications trailer and the bike ride director.  We setup a "portable" MESH station with an AirRouter AR and a Grandstream GXP1400. The portable station was powered with a 10,000 mah 5 volt cellphone battery pack, which is known to be able to run this combination for over 10 hours. (Both IP phone and ARAR operate on 5V).

Urban mesh for public service event

Forums:
I have been asked to set up a mesh network for a public service event in Chicago. I am new to AREDN (just flashed my first AirRouter 2 days ago) but have set up a BBHN mesh in my other home in Kerrville, TX. What do I need to consider in this urban environment to make it work? The nodes will be about 1.5 miles apart on 2-4 lane straight, flat,  tree lined city streets with 4 to 20+ story buildings on either side. There is a railroad overpass at one point. Should I try to go up and over or maybe just set up a tunnel to the command post for the mesh beyond the overpass?

Ubiquity Camera and RTSP

Forums:
Has anyone used Ubiquiti cameras?  Can you make them work with VLC and RTSP?
Ours disconnects after a minute.

How to enable Internet access for whole network?

Forums:
I have a GS105E in my shack and it allows my mesh LAN to access the Internet as advertised.
If I want to temporarily allow Internet access to all the nodes on our local WAN for package installation, what needs to be done to enable it?

Thanks.

AREDN Online Map Tools

Forums:

Is there a way to access the Google Map tools on the AREDN online station map?  Would be nice to be able to measure distance between stations, etc. like we can in regular Google Maps - guess I could load the .KMZ file?  How is that mapping project coming along?

Are there different links to different versions?

Repeater Linking - Yaesu System Fusion WIRES-X

Forums:
I wanted to provide an update on our repeater linking project on our AREDN Southmesh system. We have been successful in getting a Yaesu System Fusion Repeater and other nodes hooked up with the Yaesu System Fusion WIRES-X HRI-200 interface.  We used SMART VPN with the Smart Switch option $60 / yr to provide the forwarding of the ports needed to make this work.  Has anyone else done this?  Are there any other /better /cheaper options available to satisfy the port forwarding requirements of the HRI-200?

The arrl book

Forums:
I’ve been reading the book, “High Speed Multimedia for Amateur Radio” with the intention of setting up a node here in Foxboro, MA. I don’t know what it is but I’m having trouble figuring out a lot of the details. It may be that, as he says, the book is intended as an overview or it may be that I miss critical points as I read the book. Whether by my own inattention or by omissions in the book I’d like to present my thoughts.

Nanobridge m2 Multiple mounts

Forums:

Our Mesh group in Michigan's Upper Peninsula have purchased 15 of the Nanobridges M2.

Does anyone have data on needed vertical separation if mounted on a single tower in almost opposite directions?

Or when mounted with 45 degrees azimuth and connected with cat 5?

Thanks - Vance - KC8RGO

Event support and liability - video evidence

Forums:
This weekend, a group supported a major parade event in San Juan Capistrano, CA.  This is primarily the Tri-Cities and Mission Viejo RACES and local CERT teams--this is in Orange County.  Over the last couple of years, mesh networking has been demonstrated to the point that we are now invited inside the Sheriff's Mobile Command Center as a core service.  This isn't the everyday communication event for us under a tent--see attached pictures.  This year we provided 6 ipCams along the parade route with 2 ipCams that have onboard 64Gb SD memory to record.
