Alert when a node joins the mesh

Forums:
Hi folks

I finally have my second node installed and running here in Central Virginia (www.cvadn.net)!  As I open the net up for local hams to connect, I would like to know who is using the network.  Has anyone figured out how to get an alert when a node connects to the mesh?

Thanks much.  Mike KQ9P

Tunnel indicators

Forums:

I know what (tun) means next to a link.  But what does this mean next to a tunneled link?

  • (tun*1)
Also - (wan)(tun) means both a tunnel and a WAN link, right?  Others show it but my Mikrotik does not.  Wondering if that's a bug.

Thanks

integrating AREDN into an existing network..

Forums:
Hello, we have an existing network made of wired servers with a dhcp server in area A.
We would like to extend the network by adding new areas B and C.
Area a has a AREDN mesh node acting as a gateway to mesh nodes in area B and C.
We would like all the computers on all area to get their ip addresses from the existing dhcp server but not from AREDN mesh node.
How can we do it ?

I read this tutorial based on hsmm. Would these instructions work on AREDN ?

SNMP on new release?

Forums:
I was planning on monitoring some of the hilltop nodes with MRTG, but I don't see SNMP in the package list.  Has it been removed?

Bridging Multiple Networks

Forums:

I am having trouble getting my head around how to bridge my internal 192.x.x.x network with my AREDN and could use a few more brain cells from the collective.

I should start by saying I am not a newbie at this and worked in the IT industry and familiar with NATing, Bridging, Routers and Firewalls which is why this is so frustrating.

The basic setup is as follows:

1. Internal 192.... network
2. M5 Bridge to remote Network.
Remote network is bridged to the AREDN network BUT the M5 is running commercial 5GHz wifi (not that it matters)

Interference with 440 repeater

Forums:

Is it possible for a pair of M2 Nanostations to interfere with a 440 MHZ repeater?

We installed a a pair on M2's and a PTZ camera on a tower in the middle of August and have had no issues with it until tonight. When the 440 link came up right before our weekly net it started making a lot of extra noise and tones, these would come and go a little bit. Even after the net they continued. I just returned home from the tower site and as soon as I unplugged the nodes the noise quit.

Ubuntu netplan

Forums:

UPDATE: Revised 2018 11 23

If you use Ubuntu or derivatives on a computer connected to your LAN/Internet and an AREDN localnode and you have moved on to version 17.04 or 18.04 or later, then you will encounter a new network configuration system called 'netplan'. I have spent 2 weeks trying to make a workable configuration file for routing to LAN, Internet and AREDN and found that this 'new' tool (it is over a year old) is poorly documented and totally non-obvious.

Disclaimer: I am not a network engineer. I am just a domestic user of Xubuntu for 10+ years.

Device-to-Device Ethernet Linking

Forums:
Hello,
I want to deploy two Ubiquiti M2 and M5 on a tower.
I am looking for a way to mesh these two devices or nodes together via the LAN port(s), and be able to mesh all of them as if it was over RF.
I read this article talking about Inter-mesh Tunneling

But the above link does not give a step by step solution on how to do this..

Just a quick reminder that Trevor posted an excellent article on his website about a portable node he built. He has very detailed instructions and a bill of materials
