High location sector antennas talking to other high site sector antennas

Forums:
We are starting to plan a deployment on the east side of Vancouver Island and we have two tentative sites which are about 6 miles apart.   One is very high on a mountain at 955 m and the other is lower at 255 m in elevation.   There is a completely clear signal path between the two.

Ultra-compact Battery "Box"

Forums:
I needed to get another power supply for my nodes for an upcoming event. I've got a yard trimmer that takes 20V Li-Ion batteries. Also, had an extra charger that was bad for those batteries (I've got a couple spare batteries), so decided to take my spare POE switch and one of the batteries to make a seperate battery box. All I did was harvest 2 contacts and the bottom half of the shell from the bad charger, checked the power pins with a DMM to double check polarity, and wire those to the power connector on the switch.

Linphone Problem

Forums:
I am unable to make Linphone work now. It used to work some time ago, but I don't remember what all may have changed.
I have Linphone running in 2 PCs in my shack.  Windows XP.
If I connect them together via a switch connected to the internet, Linphone works fine between them.
But if I connect the switch instead to my tower node, Linphone has no audio, only 1-way slow video, and disconnects after about 30 seconds.
If I connect the switch to a different mesh node in the shack, Linphone works fine.
The tower node is a Rocket M2 XM.

Extending San Francisco network to Half Moon Bay

Forums:

Having just moved to Half Moon Bay, I was dismayed and somewhat alarmed when most Internet and even some cell phone services went down yesterday (Tuesday May 3rd) for over 8 hours.  Posters on the Nextdoor social network forum say such outages are common in this area due to the single fragile fiber link from Redwood City.  That problem suggests that extending the San Francisco AREDN  to HMB would be a very valuable contribution to the productively and safety of this community, in particular during fire seasons .  I have deployed a similar system to 70 previously unserved homes in rural Maui

Starting AREDN in my County and needing Guidance

Forums:

Hello

First off wanted to introduce myself. Name is Clayton W4CMB, I am a repeater owner here in Franklin Co GA and currently looking into starting a AREDN network.

I have thus far a single site that I could place some equipment and branch out from there. My goal is to have a backup data network that can span a majority of my county and can be interfaced via VOIP phone amongst a handful of Fire Departments. This would be laying the ground game for further backup emergency systems withing the county fire departments.

2.4Ghz interference from beacon

Forums:
We have a Ubiquiti rocket(channel -2)(2.397GHz) and 2G-15 sector antenna up about 90 feet on a tower.  Last week a 2.304 GHz beacon with an EIRP of 13 watts was installed at the 80 foot mark on the opposite side of the tower.  Unfortunately, this has rendered the node virtually unusable.  The current assumption is that the receiver in the rocket is being overloaded from the beacon.  Obviously, the first thing to try is turn off the beacon.  If the beacon is the culprit, does anyone think that adding a shield to the back of the sector antenna would help reduce the overload.  I am asking this be

The Beginnings of a Chicago Build Out

Forums:

Hey All,
I have proposed to, and gotten approval from, a local club in the north Chicago area to start the process of an Aredn build out.  Attached below is the approved proposal.  I would appreciate any and all feedback, but am specifically looking for insights on hardware selection and the pairing of antenna and transceiver selections.  This proposal has already been approved, so improving the proposal specifically is not important.  Just the ideas and hardware in it.

Official AREDN Map submission tool

Forums:

This tool, from K5DLQ, will allow you to submit your nodes lat/lon info to the AREDN Map without the node having to be able to get to the internet
You use this tool from another computer, running windows, that is connected to the internet. Not from the node you want to submit.

Recent Nightly Builds

Forums:
Above and beyond a dozen or so updates to the not-yet-published new UI, the latest nightly build contains the following fixes:
  • Typo in one frequency display
  • Nodename parsing error (only certain types of nodenames)
  • Long node names (>23 characters) no longer keep tunnels (client & server) from working.   (Note - both ends of the tunnel must have the update)
  • SNR charts again display as expected in the Charts area
