KE4HGP.
A KEY STEP is to look at the warning at the top of that page related to AirOS 5.6 and higher.

A little confused is where most of us got started. With the exception of the great bunch who have lead this adventure into AREDN, we all struggled to understand most of this. First, when you flash your hardware with the AREDN firmware, you drastically alter how it works. That statement is not as scary as it sounds, but you do need to change a lot of what you knew about routers to begin to understand it all. The links in a MESH network are formed over the wireless part of the device rather than the wired, backwards from what we all took for granted with normal internet routers.
These fine folks here have done a wonderful job of providing us with a seriously functional platform. It does take some reading ahead of time to get properly started. There are a few cautions that are essential for success including the necessity of knowing what version of the hardware you will be working with. A failure here will provide you with a brick, either useless or requiring a lot of extra work to recover it.
There are several Ubiquity devices available and capable of AREDN service. Each has it's own unique properties and capabilities. Some are single port devices, Bullit, AirGrid, etc. The AirRouter is much like the normal routers we have known and used. It has multiple ports, some have special properties that provide for the gateway function and others, providing the MESH network with internet access. You need to be using the correct port to administer the device and utilize these alternate functions. Initial access to the Ubiquity device will give you fits if you do not follow recommended steps and likewise after it's flashed with AREDN. Check the process and follow the recommended steps to insure success.
Like many of us, I am still learning and exploring the many aspects of MESH networking. You will be successful as well after a few small steps and learning as you go. Don't give up. The potential here is huge and what we can do with AREDN is nearly limitless. All thanks to some very talented and dedicated folks who saw the potential and put a lot of work into providing something that we can all use.

- downgraded firmware on my new Rocket M2 to 5.5.11, re-ran u-boot with result = good good
- installed AREDN over AirOS 5.5
- set my pc network interface to DHCP addressing
- steps 3-7 above
... but i get a "this site can't be reached' error, also indicates "localnode's server DNS address could not be found." ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED
part of this issue may be that i used windows 10 via parallels on my iMac. i was not able to see the initial AirOS page when i had device plugged directly into the iMac ethernet port, but i did see it when i plugged the Rocket LAN port into my home router, which allowed me to proceed to where i am now. however i can't find an option on the iMac/settings/network windows to "Obtain DNS server address automatically", as indicated in the "Uploading firmware to Ubiquiti" picture/text instructions page. on parallels/windows 10/network connections / properties, IPV4 / properties, the "Obtain DNS server address automatically" button is populated, but after steps 3-7 above i still get "Hmm, we can't reach this page"
Any help much appreciated!!
Also, the assumption is this laptop/desktop is connected on the Mesh Node's LAN network and this is not mixed in somehow with the home network. If default mesh node settings, your windows 10 OS should have received a 10.x.x.x address.
Which device(s) did you load with AREDN firmware? Is this more than, e.g. a Nanostation and your desktop?

done via the node access and AREDN. You have an AREDN node rather than a router once you flash it with AREDN. New functions specific to the AREDN node firmware should give you everythging that you need and as desired, much of what you would have with the Ubiquity firmware would be there although under the AREDN setup as provided for.

Ubiquiti ROCKETM2 2.4GHz Hi Power 2x2 MIMO AirMax TDMA BaseStation
Ubiquiti Networks 802.11N Wireless Router Hp (AIRROUTER-HP(US))
Ubiquiti AM-2G16-90 AirMax Sector 2.4 GHz 2x2 MIMO BaseStation Sector Antenna

This would be a 2 node network. Get others to point their antennas to your Rocket-Sector to extend the network. but it's only interesting until you start adding-defining services to communicate over the network (voip, ipcam, etc.) and begin to use it.

Tim, bingo. The AirRouter is set to "ch -1" @ 20Mhz and the Rocket looks to be on "ch -2" @ 20Mhz. Change both of them to "ch -2" @ 10Mhz channel width--assuming you want them to talk to each other via RF. The 20Mhz will slip past the edge of our licensing on ch -2. ch -1 has overlap with the wifi ch 1 signals nearby, so best to drop down to ch -2, unless you reall do want them on 2 different channels.
there doesn't appear to be a network cable between the Rocket and the Airrouter to 'DtDlink' them together. Is this by design or one more issue to work out? They do see each other via RF, but when they are at same location, always best to let them route over the hard cable and not put more RF traffic in the air than necessary.

channel = -2
channel width = 10Mhz
SSID = AREDN <- this is default
This is what you well tell other ham buddies to set their AREDN devices to when they want to connect to your Sector Antenna on the shed. Hopefully, it is sufficiently high up for line of sight needed for others to connect in.

The reset button will reset the root password to default or reset back to AREDN first boot if held long enough. When you're ready to give another shot, send me separate email and maybe we can get it going.
Joe AE6XE
Looks like it is working. Your AirRouter has made a link to the other device, I presume the Rocket on ch -2. Go into mesh status and you should see it as a neighbor.

AirRouter: KE4HGP-RocketM2 <- you may want to change this to KE5HGP-AR-FM16xs
Rocket M2: KE4HGP-RM2-FM16xs
To also add the Rocket M2 to the AREDN map:
1) browse to "http://KE4HGP-RM2-FM16xs.local.mesh:8080/cgi-bin/setup"
2) scroll down to the optional settings
3) type in lat, long, grid square
4) click "Apply Location settings"
5) click "Upload to AREDN servers"
