Changes at the AREDN Website

The AREDN website has recently been freshened behind the scenes!

  • There's a new download server.  It's faster and now supports https and rsync

  • The AREDN legacy map has been supplemented with a new interactive map called the AREDN World Map..   Since it's aware of the supernode network, you can zoom into any area on the map that has a supernode.*

    Features of the World Map:

  • If you click on one of the colored node icons in the upper-right hand corner, you select only those nodes on the map.  For example, if you click on the supernodes icon, you'll see only the supernode network.

  • If you click on a node's icon, you'll get a pop-up window containing all that node's vital data.

  • If you click on a tunnel, you'll get a pop-up window listing the node at each end of the link, the distance between the nodes, and what type of link it is.

  • In the upper-left hand corner is a menu containing:

    • topology - several map background choices

    • data - download database, available in several formats

    • channel - selectively shown any channel

    • phone - a map designed for a handheld device

    • find - will...

AREDN Release 3.23.12.0

Here are the release notes for AREDN production release 3.23.12.0, derived from nightly build 20231018

Enhancements

Added supernode support.

"Supernodes" are specially configured AREDN nodes in various locations which support a "mesh of meshes". With this release your localnode will automatically detect a nearby supernode, if one exists, and will show a new button on the Mesh Status page, labeled "Cloud Mesh". Clicking on that button will take you to the Mesh Status page of that supernode and show you all the nodes and services on the Cloud Mesh. You can navigate to any of them as though they were on your local mesh.

The URL for the supernode map is https://arednmap.xojs.org/ Clicking on any of the node types in the upper-right-hand corner of the map will filter all other nodes out, showing only the types selected.

Remember and reinstall packages after firmware upgrade (AFTER this version is installed)

Simplified search tool

Added LZ77 decompression for Mikrotik firmware, which is now using a different compression method

Cron:

  • Now run cron.boot tasks earlier
  • Changed poll rate default to one hour
  • Added installable cron package for people who need more functionality

AREDN Radio Selection

Steve KC0EUW produced a short video to help you select the right AREDN mesh radio for your needs. He explains the use of the Supported Platform Matrix to verify the types of suitable devices. Steve then walks you through the types of operational situations you may encounter. He completes the selection process by using the Device Selection Spreadsheet created by Andre K6AH to make well-informed choices about radios that meet your requirements.
