Where: Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena, 100 W California Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91105, Conference Room behind the cafeteria. Hospital parking is $6, there is limited free street parking, and HMH is within walking distance of Metro Gold Line Fillmore Station.

Preliminary schedule:

1130 - 1200 Refresher demonstration of Winlink over mesh (could be dropped or shortened based on mesh discussion)
1200 - 1300 EmcomMap by K6OAT

Activity Days are relaxed events where amateur radio operators get together and work on topics of interest. In November the focus is on AREDN MESH. We are especially thrilled to try out Dan K6OAT's brand new EmComMap live, an incredibly versatile tool designed for real-time communications, situational awareness and event status over the AREDN MESH.  (If you cannot join us in person but have access to the SoCal MESH you can watch the traffic develop from noon onwards. Find the EmComMap on the mesh node list and enter guest guest).

Bring your MESH Go Kits!

Winlink over mesh

Oliver:

It would be very nice if this was video recorded and shared.
I am interested in 'Winlink over mesh' and mapping application.

Hi Chuck,

I will ask Gary W6GSW if he would be comfortable with recording the presentations as these are all his presentations on Saturday, with the exception of the EmComMap. The room is not set up for video, so we would have to improvise. I'll let you know either way.

AREDN MESH makes Winlink the killer app for EmComm. The ability to send messages via MESH, HF (VARA, Ardop), VHF (Packet, VARA FM, Ardop FM) and to reach any email on the planet with gateway access makes Winlink very versatile.

We use Winlink over MESH constantly, both via gateway (Telnet Post Office) and P2P (Telnet P2P).
The new AREDN firmware upgrade 3.18.9 makes setting up gateways really easy:
Telnet Post Office
Open Session
Add Server
Update AREDN MESH Node List (you can also add gateways manually, if you know the IP address)
Pick a Winlink Gateway
Click Save
Click Start

For P2P our standard operating procedure is to
Find your PC's IP Address (Windows Key, then type cmd then ipconfig)
Check in on MESHChat on a node and post your IP address
In Winlink
Telnet P2P
Open Session
Add Station
Enter IP Address of the Station you want to connect with, make sure that station is also in a Telnet P2P session
Click Save
Click Start

The EmComMap is a brand new tool developed by Dan K6OAT.  We are very excited about it because it is a game-changer for EmComm via the MESH. Our preliminary tests show great versatility and speed. We are doing a hands-on training session and live demo, replaying the limited Statewide Medical Health Exercise we had last week.

I will let you know if there will be a video or not.

Oliver K6OLI

Activity Days

LAECT conducts "Activity Day" on the fourth Saturday of every month.  A wide range of Amateur Radio-related topics are discussed at these user-driven sessions, although there is lots of interest in (and thus a natural focus on) emcomm, digital and, of course, mesh.

At our first Activity Day on May 24, 2014, a couple people suggested that the sessions be recorded.  Since then, several people have suggested the same.  After a bit of follow on discussion, it has always come down to being that "I" should have the meetings recorded, posted, etc.  To date, no one has taken up the challenge to go ahead and do it.

There is no objection per se to recording and distributing the sessions, as long as presenters agree, and participants are informed that sessions are being recorded.  Its just that I don't make videos, and have no interest in doing so.

People ask why?  As District Emergency Coordinator for the Northeast District of ARES Los Angeles, my territory stretches from Downtown Los Angeles east to the County border.  This encompasses 32 incorporated cities plus some County area, including their 17 9-1-1 receiving hospitals.  LAECT manages the Pasadena-San Gabriel Valley portion of the Southern California mesh.  I operate several mesh-enabled Winlink gateways.  I volunteer time at our Church and to other activities, and try to play with radio every now and them.  Sometimes I have to deal with a day job.  smiley

There's an opportunity if someone in Southern California is interested in taking this on.  Anyone with the necessary skills can contact Oliver K6OLI or me @arrl.net .

Now off to the day's festivities.  Happy Thanksgiving to all!

K6OAT EmComMap

Some background and general informaton:

As its primary support mission, the Los Angeles Section of ARES (ARESLAX) provides emergency communications for the Los Angeles County EMS Agency and the 73 9-1-1 receiving hospitals (those certified for emergency departments) located within the County's 4000+ square mile area.

Dan K6OAT serves as an Emergency Coordinator in the Northwest District of ARESLAX.  As more hospitals and ARESLAX operators became mesh-capble, Dan began developing his EmComMap.  The application is browser-based.  Each user has a local database, which syncs over the mesh with one or more central databases.  This provides for both redundancy and the ability to continue operations locally if the mesh link is temporarily unavailable.

As an overview, the application allows you to set up and track incidents, locations and operators, and view this data using OSM map.  Messages with attachments may be exchanged.

Attached is a screen capture of an incident map showing the traffic tab:

The maps support overlays of static information.  In this example, the hospitals, fire stations and police facilities are such information.  In the upper right (under "Pasadena") is an icon for Huntington Hospital.  Also shown there is the icon representing an operator on station.  The "caution" icon along the "river" represents a notification which has been placed on the map.

When establishing an incident, you first define the map area the incident involves.  You can zoom this map area to the extent of the available map tiles.  Traffi can be filtered based upon related location (in this case, hospitals).

In its current form, EmComMap is somewhat customized to work with the ARESLAX support mission.  That can be modified, or made more generic.

After additional field testing, Dan plans to release EmComMap as an open source project.  Then anyone can customize it or build upon it to meet their requirements.

Dan can provide further information.  We'll be sure that he sees this thread.

K6OAT EmComMap 0.3b release

A previously noted, Dan Ruderman K6OAT is the developer of the EmComMap application.

EmComMap 0.3b has been released for testing, and Dan has authorized me to share this information.

We have been testing EmComMap within the ARES Los Angeles Section, including during this month's California Statewide Medical and Health Exercise.  The test version has been accessible over the Southern California mesh.

Dan now has a public demo/test database available at http://52.88.82.148/EmComMap/html/index.html .  Guest login is available (guest/guest).  This database is separate from the one running on the Southern California mesh.

A pdf of the preliminary user guide is attached for those interested in learning more.
