I have a similar power issue with my 2 Polycoms that I solved though a much more complicated hardware solution. I'm copying you.
Also - the momentary switch on the handset is brilliant. In the military we had secure phones that had that button on the side so that background conversations could be cut off while you were in 'listening mode'. It always made the conversation much easier to her. I never thought about cutting the audio like this on a VOIP phone - great idea. I think it'll also cut down on bandwidth usage. I'm stealing this idea, too.
