Hello everyone,
I am a beginner in the "AREDN" Project and I need help
I have at home two Routers (2) mikrotic Ac3
and a router (1) Mikrotic Ac2
and a router (1) Mikrotic Ac2
and I can not put the Firmware "3.25.2.0" of AREDN in these Mikrotic that I downloaded from the AREDN website
I use a MAC
"MacBook pro" laptop
Is it possible to have the step by step to succeed in putting the Firmware in my 3 Mikrotic Routers
The two Ac3 routers are to be "SUPERNODE"
I want to succeed in this wonderful project of "AREDN"
for us here for the civil security of Quebec will be a wonderful work tool
I tried in different ways and I can't do it,
yes I do the factory rest of the Mikrotic,
my network cable is plugged into port 1 to succeed in changing the firmware
without any success
Thank you for your service

I'm doing tests and tests to succeed
question? : the files are in "bin" format
a compressed file
do I have to decompress them?
for it to work
if yes with my MAC I am not able to decompress them ???
Thank you for helping me
Good evening

No, no need to de-compress them.
Did you follow the documentation?

Not important, but why do you want a supernode?
Less important, why do you want 2 supernodes?

OK, we had a conference call with many Clubs here in Quebec.
And we want to have an emergency system that could connect all the Clubs in the Province of Quebec.
And I am south of Quebec
and there is no system at present
I am with the Appalachian mountain range near "Main, Vermont"
I thought that to connect with other Clubs in the province of Quebec I had to have a Supermode to go over the mountains in my very mountainous area
see aprs.fi
for the positioning of the Supernodes

also there will be a 4th one
that I want to have a link between these 4 places to have a redundancy of the system
currently I already use 5.8 Ghz dishes for this for 12 years which works very well
Thanks for all the info, tonight I will try to configure my first Mikrotic Ac3 Router
I can't wait to see if I will succeed with my MacBook Pro laptop
Thank you for your service Greatly appreciated

Hi, Luc:
The function of a supernode has nothing to do with going over mountains.
The function of a supernode has nothing to do with propagation.
A supernode does not have more RF power.
Essentially, a 'supernode' is a DNS router with the same
DtD and tunnel capability as any other node.
The more memory and CPU ... the more DNS it can do.
I hope this helps, Chuck

Ve2luq if you reach out to the other node operators in Quebec, or me, I'd be happy to walk you through the firmware install if you find the guides too complicated. I can walk through it via zoom or some other video chat.

Entries on the AREDN World Map are put there by an app which pulls the entire list of some 3000 nodes that are linked to AREDN supernodes. When one node in your local mesh island is linked to a supernode, your whole mesh island will appear on the map without your having to do anything.
The World Map is updated at least daily, usually about 0000 US Eastern Time.
Good luck on expanding AREDN into eastern Canada.

A few things when loading AREDN into your hAP.
1. Protected Router Boot is defaulted to disabled. I did a hAP ac lite with RouterOS 6.49.18 just a few days ago, and I think Protected Router Boot was not in the GUI.
2. The first file you load, ...kernel.bin, should be renamed rb.elf. NOT rb.elf.bin.
3. As K6CCC stated, the sysupgrade.bin file should be used exactly as it is. No decompression.
4. Study the AREDN documentation for Mikrotik node setup. It is a pretty good piece. There are also videos on YouTube, but I do not have references to any that are recent.
5. If you can get to the "Terminal window" in RouterOS (before you load the AREDN kernel file), type
system routerboard settings print
That will give you what you want, like Protected Router Boot status, Boot Device, and Reset button timing values.
6. Move the Ethernet cable from Port 1 to one of the other ports (P2 would be good) after kernel.bin file goes in.
I have a very detailed procedure that I have used on several hAP ac lites and a hAP ac2, loading AREDN through a Windows 11 desktop. I can send it to you if it would help.
