Asterisk on nodes
Hi,

just a short query - as AREDN runs on OpenWRT, did anybody ever try to install Asterisk or FreePBX directly on a node? there seem to exist packages for that...

Asterisk on nodes
Hi, Kurt:

I tried and failed. I just use Raspberry Pis instead.
Mark N2MH brought a ?Gl-iNet? device running Asterisk to Hamcation 2024.
You could check with Mark to see how he achieved this.

Resources?
Commenting for interest since I need to learn Asterisk, but dedicated hardware nodes are quite resource constrained. When I stood up a quick FreePBX server it consumed way more resources than even my VM nodes are allocated, so I'm curious how this would work.

Resources: Asterisk modules .vs. FreePBX server
N7CPZ:
If you only install the necessary/needed modules,
the resources are much less than a full server installation.

Interesting
Chuck,

Do you have any guides you'd recommend for someone learning Asterisk and setting up an ultralight deployment like that for the first time? I'd be interested to learn.

setting up an ultralight deployment
"Do you have any guides you'd recommend for someone learning Asterisk and setting up an ultralight deployment like that for the first time?"

n7cpz:

No.
I do not recommend setting up Asterisk on an AREDN node.
I do not recommend setting up Asterisk on an ultralight deployment.
Well, unless you consider a Raspbery Pi to be inclusive of 'ultralight'.
I know of an asterisk guide appropriate for an AREDN network.

I run a proper application
I run a proper application server with considerable compute resources. The ultralight part is appealing since I often feel like a Japanese train conductor pushing more applications through the doors with a broom to make everything fit. Realistically I have plenty of headroom.

I'd appreciate whatever you have.

An Asterisk implementation on an AREDN network
I have a resource to share and it is available already as it is on the World AREDN network.
Mark Herson N2MH has a marvelous resource here:

and here:

I recommend that you start here in Version 2:
