Kevin,  This newer NS M2 XW device didn't exist back in the Airos v5.5.x days.  There is no path from Ubiquiti to downgrade it to a compatible bootloader to install AREDN 3.16.1.1.   You can however directly 'tftp' install the nightly build image on this device and run AREDN.

Yes this is correct, a
Yes this is correct, a username and password is requested to access setup.  This spans multiple releases of the firmware.  The user is always "root" and the 'firstboot' password is in the install instructions here:

http://www.arednmesh.org/content/how-setup-your-aredn-node

All of the XW models, except the NanoStation M5 XW released in 3.16.1.x,  have a page header something to the effect of being tested.   XW devices have been up in production mode on towers for a couple years now.    Let's just say that a release that includes all these XW models is long over due when we'd remove this statement.

in the firstboot mode, the
in the firstboot mode, the node has an IP address of 192.168.1.1 and assigns your laptop an address of 192.168.1.x (or you still have a static address in this range).  After completing the setup, it can be a bit tricky to ensure your computer renews its IP address.   After the node boots from the setup seteps, it will change to be a 10.x.x.x address.  Make sure you unplug the cat5 cable on your computer for a few seconds after the node reboots, then plug back in to guarantee it obtains the different/new IP address in the 10.x.x.x range.

reset
is there a reset for the Areden firmware?  not finding anything but 192.168.1.20  or 192.168.1.1 and not communicating?

If AREDN firmware is running,
If AREDN firmware is running, after the device has been powered on for a minute or two, then hold the reset button for approximately 15 seconds.  It would reboot and come back up in firstboot mode.  The IP address of the device would then be 192.168.1.1.

when i unplug my laptop...it doesn't get a ip from Aredn DHCP  it gets from my local HDCP server.  What is the static ip address of the AREDN server so i can get my own ip address...i understand the gateway  10.17.240.17 and is the server 10.17.240.20??

its a little confusing how this work in the instructions.

Kevin,

Kevin,

On the box you received this device in, what is the "test date"?   See this forum post related to the Nanostation Loco M5 XW:

https://www.arednmesh.org/content/second-attempt-nanostation-loco-m5-no-ethernet-problem#comment-9214

The openwrt forums have reported the same issue in the Nanostation Loco M2 XW devices too.    Other devices may have the same issue.   If this is the case with your device, then loading the "nano-m-xw" firmware results in a dead ethernet port.    We've determined that that loading the "rocket-m-xw" image will work.   Ubiquiti has new hardware revisions, but all the model numbers are still the same.      I don't think this is the case however, if you have a non-loco Nanostation.

You may need to make sure your wireless adaptor is turned off, so that there is no confusion and your laptop will only receive an IP address from the mesh node.    The mesh node will assign your laptop a 192.168.1.x address (and has 192.168.1.1 itself) in firstboot mode.  After the node has been configured with your callsign, etc,  then it will get (by default) an 8 address subnet in the 10.x.x.x space.  The specific address is derived from the MAC address of the wireless card in the device.
