I have read that a AREDN node has the tunneling software built-in. How would one set up a arrangement where there are 3 nodes connected via DTD and a tunnel to another mesh?

Use a GS105E

Buy yourself a Netgear GS105E and configure it as described in https://www.arednmesh.org/content/gs105e-1-lan-3-node-1-wan

Connect your PC to port 2

Port 1: Mesh Node A

Port 2: LAN #1 on Node A

Port 3: Mesh Node B

Port 4: Mesh Node C

Port 5: Internet WAN for Nodes A/B/C (Tunnel)

GS105E and POE

Looking at the specs of the GS105E, I assume that I will need POE injectors for the nodes. Correct?

Yes. Alternatively, you can use the Ubiquiti ToughSwitch TS-5 at about $90 which provides 24v at configured port.

VLANs

The 3 nodes would be connected together via VLAN2 for DtD. As long as the nodes see each other on this VLAN, they will automatically connect with each other. The node running the tunnel software would be connected to "the internet" via VLAN1 (tagged), the WAN interface on the node setup. It is only necessary to run one tunnel server/client out of the three nodes.

You would then have 3 untagged subnets, one from each node, available for hosts and devices as usual.

Tunnel IP resolution

Since I am new to the tunnel option, does the tunnel software expect a DHCP server on the WAN connection or can it connect to a static IP?

DHCP on WAN

In the Basic Setup screen you configure the node's WAN for DHCP or not. Tunnels can be configured with either host names or static addresses.
