I see in the development section that a MikroTik BaseBox 5 is being tested. Is there a requirement to use the "International" hardware version vs. the "U.S." version which is frequency locked? I am familiar with a large number of their products and would be happy to do some testing. Ian

Ian, we do need BaseBox 5 and BaseBox 2 devices to start getting onto live mesh networks with RF links to go the next step of testing. The hardware ID that is compatible is 912UAG-5HPnD and 912UAG-2HPnD. This is the Openwrt model definition that we leverage and build on top of and does not specify the US or International versions. I expect both will work. The work so far has been done on the International version 912UAG-5HPnD-OUT, and not sure on the 2Ghz. KE2N, if you're reading can you post the full model ID of your basebox 2 to confirm? Thanks to KE2N for bringing up the basebox 2 for the first time.

The procedure to do first install of AREDN firmware on a mikrotik is a little more complicated than ubiquiti hardware. We're going to have to write a windows utility for streamlining the process. If you have one of these devices, interest, and ability to get this up live on an RF link and greater mesh network, then I'll work direct with individuals to take this next testing step. However, if anyone's linux skillset is limited, you may have to ship the device to me to load AREDN firmware the first time. Once it is loaded, then future images can be uploaded in the AREDN setup menus.

912UAG-2HPnD-OUT ... just like the 5 GHz model number. I would note that my units have FCC approval stickers on them so I suppose that they are US versions (I bought them years ago).

Although they are made in Latvia, neither the Flytec nor Baltic (nor 4 other web sties I checked) mention anything about an International version of this unit.

Per Mikrotik site:

- RB912UAG-5HPnD-OUT-US (USA) is factory locked for 5170-5250MHz and 5725-5835MHz frequencies. This lock can not be removed.

- RB912UAG-5HPnD-OUT (International) supports 5150MHz-5875MHz range (Specific frequency range can be limited by country regulations).

I expect the difference is only in the Mikrotik firmware.

The US versions have only existed for a couple years. I unfortunately have a few of them in the mix at work (it's all I could find in stock for a time senstive project) and both versions have FCC stickers. Some of the US ones just have model# stickers over the top of the originals with the -US suffix added. I suspect they just change the hardware ID and maybe the Mikrotik OS looks at that and locks up. There is only one version of their software, for both variants. In any case probably safer to look for the Intl ones for our uses. Baltic does have both versions of the BaseBox at the moment. I'll pick up an extra as soon as I figure out where I can put it on the air :)

MikroTik LHG XL HP5

The MikroTik LHG XL HP5 has the same note about frequency range that Joe posted last July. I am seriously looking into that radio after my tax refunds show up. Anyone know for sure if loading the AREDN firmware eliminated that frequency limit? I'm also speculating that it will be fine, but would be nice to know for sure.

It works for LHG-HP5-XL

Hey K6CCC,
I bought a couple RBLHG-HP5nD-XLs (and the non-XLs and the 'normal power LHG's). I love these things. The board is a modified LHG-5 with a full board heatsink on the antenna side, power circuit with higher amperage, and an amped TX circuit. There is no difference in US and Int'l version. Once you load the AREDN software on these devices, they are all the same.

Microtik RBLHG-5HPnD-US

I see that you are using the LHG's. I just purchased one (RBLHG-5HPnD=US) and am having trouble flashing it. Everytime I try to upload the bin file I get a BAD GATEWAY response. Can you offer any help. I have tried everything I including three different computers but each time I get the same results.

The RBLHG-5HPnD device was only recently put into the firmware. The 3.19.3.0 release only had definitions for the RBLHG-5nD model. Give the nightly build images a try?

US or International version - no difference

So far I've gotten both US and International version of all of the MikroTik gear on the AREDN compatible list (even some that aren't on the list that I've loaded AREDN on successfully [QRTs, RB912 boards, etc.]). Once you load AREDN firmware on the device it doesn't matter. The 'frequency lock' sounds ominous the way they describe it on the websites, but so far it's only been in the RouterOS firmware.
I take apart every device I get and photograph the board (with the exception of the LDF - I only did one of those - they're too hard to silicone back together) and there's been no difference in hardware.
