TP-LINK TL-SG108E VLAN Setup

Anyone using the above "smart" switch in a VLAN?  Any tips on setup are appreciated.

BTW, picked up two on sale from Newegg for $30 each.

This switch WILL NOT WORK

This switch WILL NOT WORK because T-Link states in their documentation that:

"To ensure the normal communication of the factory switch, the default VLAN of all ports is set to be
VLAN1. VLAN 1 cannot be modified or deleted."

AREDN used VLAN1 for WAN access.

Just want to share the TP-Link switch newest firmware
Hello,

I just wanted to let you know that the latest TP-Link firmware now has VLan 1 ability to remove from vlan 1 and to make changes to ports. came out 2-7-2018

TP-Link firmware
BTW, this applies to the TL-SG105E and TL-SG1016DE also. Perhaps some larger switches also, but I did not check those. We've been using TP-Link everywhere we did not need VLAN 1, so this is a welcome upgrade. VLAN 1 assignability was the one feature that Netgear had over TP-Link, so that's no longer an impediment. I've been using TP-Link for small switch deployments for years and I've been very happy with them.

I don't have one, and haven't

I don't have one, and haven't worked with it personally however I helped someone some time back.

Unfortunately as I recall the manual states that every port MUST remain a member of vlan 1 (untagged) which  means the switch really is of limited use for isolating devices.

This requirement basically renders the whole point for having VLANs (isolation between ports) moot. This also means you can't set the device to use vlan1 tagged which is required to be able to have WAN make it over to the Ubiquiti device.

I'm not really sure why they did this (the manual claims its to avoid lock out of the device but a reset button would solve that) as it basically makes the feature useless on every network.

Otherwise the interface is very similar to the netgear switch.

You both are correct.  VLAN1

You both are correct.  VLAN1 is a default all untagged setting that can't be changed.  VLANs 2 to 4096 are the only user definable VLANs.  Well, at least they still make nice GP hubs for port expansion.

TP-LINK TL-SG108E VLAN Setup

We are using these units for DTD connection between Ubitquiti devices at our repeater sites.  (No WAN connection).  We use the Netgear Switches where WAN Internet access is needed.

GS108 Setup

Mine seems to be working.  See attached setup.

The tagged WAN output seemed to be incompatible with some router inputs.  But I found an old one that worked.

To be clear, the Netgear

To be clear, the Netgear GS108E's work fine.

The TP-LINK TL-SG108E does NOT. (due to the VLAN1 restriction it imposes)

Review GS108E configuration.

Review GS108E configuration.

JJ,  I cross tabluated this with the diagram shown in the other post with 2 WAN ports.   I suspect the way the switch is configured and how you intended it to work are different.   (It's working by accident, not by design and will have some odd behavior.)   Here's a key piece of information to trace the logic to see if this is really configured the way you want it.

when reading the PVID table, this means "when a packet comes 'in' this port AND it does not have a tag already, then give it this tag #".

when reading the top table this means "when a packet is going 'out' this port with this particular vlan tag, then U - remove the tag, T - leave the tag on, (and don't send out a port without a U or T".

For example, in the current config the switch would never have internal traffic for vlan 3 or 4 (none of the devices are sending packets with these tags and no PVID port is setting a tag to these #s going inside the switch to another port).  We can connect up separately callsign at @soara.org if you want to get in to more details unique to your setup.

TP-LINK TL-SG105E VLAN Setup

Confirmed that the smaller version, the SG105E also DOES NOT work if you want to incorporate a WAN into your mesh network due to the same issue...in the firmware, VLAN 1 is not user-adjustable.  VLAN 2 and up are fully adjustable, and will work fine if you want a low cost solution for Node-2-Node linking without WAN integration.

Being able to adjust the VLAN numbers on the AREDN firmware side would be a nice work-around to this problem, if any developers are interested in tackling this issue.

Confirmed - TP-Link TL-SG108E switch is usable

Confirmed that the TL-SG108E switch is fully usuable for VLANs with the latest firmware from TP-Link.
Obtain the latest firmware from TP-Link - the file name ends in V3_20171214 - see below.

The older firmware would not permit modifying VLAN 1 as in the picture below:

The latest firmware permits modifying VLAN1 as seen in the picture below

Testing the new firmware with a configuration like the NetGear GS108E, we see that the TP-Link switch now works the same way. Not shown here are the PVID settings for all 8 ports.

Apparently only available for HW ver. 3 (and not 1 or 2)

Nice, except this update apparently is only available for hardware version 3 and not 1 or 2.  Wouldn't you know it, I have version 1!  But I've already accepted that my switch won't work for me a long time ago and have re-purposed it elsewhere.

I wonder if they will ever make the change for V1 and V2....
