Aredn or BroadbandHamnet for SSID

Aredn or BroadbandHamnet for SSID

I recently loaded Aredn on an M2 HP bullet and deployed it. It wasn't until later I discovered the SSID was AREND and not Broadband-hamnet. I know the radios will only communicate with SSIDs of the same name. My question is did Aredn always have the SSID as AREDN or was it recently changed from BroadbandHamnet? I would also like to know what the general consensus is as to what SSID is being used.

Obsolete SSID
The BroadbandHamnet SSID is considered obsolete.  There may still be some links that still use it to support those who run legacy firmware and have chosen to keep it.

Andre, with that thought in mind isn't it likely that different mesh operations throughout the country/world might want to use unique SSIDs for their mesh networks? Is it necessary to use the "default" SSID loaded with the firmware?

No, it is not a requirement. You can assign an SSID of your own choosing. Only other nodes with that same SSID will mesh together. This enables you to setup test scenarios or keep local mesh networks with their own identity.

If you are running a 20MHz
If you are running a 20MHz bandwidth on 2.4GHz channel 1 then you are probably only doing this to remain compatible with some existing linksys BBHN gear and using the BroadbandHamnet SSID would therefore also make sense. If you are using any other channel or bandwidth then the AREDN SSID would be more sensible.

Maybe one can DtD link the bullet to the linksys nodes (you'll need a smart switch like the netgear GS105, and you need to do some editing of some files inside the linksys mesh node via SSH or telnet to enable a DtD port on it.  I looked at my own system, with DtD links between linksys and Ubiquiti boxes, but they are all AREDN SSIDs (don't know if that matters for DtD).  If DtD does work to connect the two different SSID networks, that might be an approach.
