A new method for communicating location data

From an article in the New York Times about providing postal services to nomadic Mongol citizens.

What3Words - use three distinct words to convey location data instead of street addresses or latitude/ longitude.

This approach may work well in stressful responses in unpopulated areas.

The What3Words approach will
The What3Words approach will sound like gibberish to everyone until it becomes mainstream. There is a very wide adoption chasm to cross.

while the What3Word sounds
while the What3Word sounds like a great idea, but you would have to have a piece of software or lookup table, Where Madenhead is a world standard and we use it already, and if you use the extended squares or the 7&8 place you can get the location down to a retaliative small area.

Interesting idea.  We started
Interesting idea.  We started using numbers to identify things because names can might be duplicated or ambiguous.  Then we assign new names to those numbers because the numbers are hard to remember, but this time they are unique names...

If they were smart they would start charging people to register their own "vanity names" for places.
