Set up instrux?

Getting a NSM2 this week and will be test connecting to the UTD AREDN this weekend.

As far as set up, do I start here: http://www.aredn.org/content/software

and select "Factory" on Nanostation M2?

Then, do I follow instructions from here: http://www.k5dlq.info/2014/12/27/quick-start-guide-to-bbhn/

Here are the setup instructions

Upload the AREDN firmware

Complete the node setup

For a brand new, just out of the box Ubiquiti node still running AIrOS, use the Factory firmware.

Adding emphasis: DO NOT skip this step. I bricked a used Bullet M2HP since I didn't do this. The reset button broke off (it was an old unit), so I wasn't able to recover it via the TFTP method.

Downgrade first

Ok, thanks, it is brand new so probably will need to be downgraded. Question though - I'm assuming I will have to have the Ubiquity 5.5.x firmware available? I looked on their web site here: https://www.ubnt.com/download/airmax-m/nanostationm
Don't see any 5.5.x or less, unless this counts: XW.v5.5.10-u2.28005.150723.1358.bin

Does that one work or is that factory 5.5.x firmware available here somewhere for the NSM2?

I ran into this the other day. Ubiquiti has rolled this off the display list (probably a next page somewhere to click on). I finally found it by a combination of the right key words with a google search:

It's the #2 firmware file in

It's the #2 firmware file in the "Past Firmware list".
It is the only file that has a different naming scheme for the file.

I'm finding, that "See Past

I'm finding, that "See Past Firmware" is showing different versions and different #s at different times. Sometimes the XM v5.5.x versions do not show. But this is what to look for when navigating or searching:

-> "airOS for XM board firmware v5.5.11".
-> "XM.v5.5.11.28002.150723.1344.bin"

I'm wondering if they have a too smart "see past history" that feeds in hit counts or your browser history...

Do not use the XW firmware for the NSM2

The NSM2 is an XM device, so the XW firmware would be inappropriate for that device.

Next question

Hi everyone, I received the NSM2 today. It needed to be back-reved on the flash as expected. Success on that, and success on the AREDN firmware. I made all the settings as instructed - but, on this last step where I disabled and enabled the ethernet adapter (I was on obtain automatically) - it was assigned 192.168.1.8 and dns was local:mesh

That's not in the 10.x space of course - what did I miss?

I do see that the M2 AREDN console setup says 10.72.250.250 on LAN

One more issue

Well, I didn't realize I was missing the distance and it wasn't saving the setup. That's fixed. Apparently I didn't save a new password (I did at the very first but guess it didn't save either). So, question - is there a standard user name and password for the AREDN software or am I hosed and have to reset this thing?

I searched on here, like I should have done in the first place - the username is "root" after AREDN is loaded.. strange.

Hi Andre, I was talking about the password after the AREDN software loads. When you change your username and password it still requires "root" as username, even though I changed it to KM5L. I read this came up for someone else as well. Anyway I'm in, all ready to go, MeshChat software install on the pi and the service is advertised on the NSM2 - ready to try it out!

There is no field to change

There is no field to change the username. It can NOT be changed via the AREDN user interface, it is always root for every node.

The "node name" field (the only field where you can put your callsign in besides the SSID) doesn't change the login username.
