Hello,

I found the following old blog message here that seems to show using the AR9271 chipset on channels -1 and -2 and 30 dBm power:

I attached a PDF save of the blog post to this message.

I would like to try to use a Raspberry Pi as an AREDN router with several AR9271 USB wifi dongles.  It seems like this should be possible given the kernel module modifications shown.  Has anyone seen this or tried these devices with AREDN?  They are old, but they are also cheap as dirt, and seems like a good way to homebrew an AREDN station from an old Pi if it works.

Hi, Dan:

The blogpost was TLDR.
  • Channel '-1' is not a clear channel at any bandwidth.
  • Channel '-2' is a clear channel at 10 Mhz (or less) bandwidth, but not 20 MHz bandwidth;
    ergo if the AR9271 chipset cannot be configured to 10 MHz bandwidth, it is not legal at channel '-2'.
  • This is an indoor only setup and not of much utility even if it were possible to configure it as an AREDN clone.
  • This setup is likely to consume much more power than any supported AREDN device.
  • It is unlikely that a developer would consider working on an 11(?) year old device.

Limited frequencies in 13cm band
Dan, I'm not sure what the rules are in Romania where YO3IIU is working, but in the US the allowed frequencies are very limited in the 13cm band -- only down to a center freq of 2.397 which is why most US folks have switched to the 5cm band.  Seems like there is quite a bit of interest in homebrew hardware, but probably not in the 13cm band.
