Is there a way to push a message (preferably highlighted) to all connected nodes on our local mesh, similar to the banner that was pushed about the last firmware update?
So an individual node must have the aam source URL manually entered into the alerts.localpath field in order to receive alerts. Is there another way to push a notice without the node owner having to enter a URL into that field?
Sorry but I'm not seeing anything at your cite that discusses either forcing a notice to a node without the owner's consent nor without the owner having to enter the URL for the webserver delivering it.
On that web page I cite:
"The AREDN® development team may post messages which Internet-connected nodes can automatically download."
That is an example of posting an AAM without the owner's consent.
You left out the most important word from my reply...
"You cannot force a message using AAM without the node owner consenting by changing their config."
the AREDN Team can force a message (to an internet connected node), but, "YOU" as an individual node operator, must set the "Alert Message Local URL" in advanced config to accept local AAM messages from your "area/region/club/etc"
Yes, you can use Alert Messages to display a message to any node on your local mesh that has opted in to receive these messages. The way it displays on the remote nodes is described here (https://arednmesh.readthedocs.io/en/latest/arednGettingStarted/node_status.html#aredn-trade-alert-messages) and the way to set up a local message source is described here (https://arednmesh.readthedocs.io/en/latest/arednGettingStarted/advanced_config.html#aredn-trade-alert-messages). There is also a YouTube video describing its use here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jURFNAHxBCM
Is opt in on by default? The idea is to direct new users of the mesh to a web page when they first join

(must be dense Monday for me)
This is a quote from your post:
"forcing a notice to a node without the owner's consent"
This is a URL that resolves to a page on a web site:
https://arednmesh.readthedocs.io/en/latest/arednGettingStarted/advanced_config.html#aredn-trade-alert-messages
Although, 'website' maybe should be one word instead of two.
I think 'website' is sometimes abbreviated to 'site'.
