Rocket M2 Ti

Hello,

I am am new at this; yet I managed to install a Bullet m2 Ti and an air grid 16 dbi node. I purchased a rocket m2 Ti but found out today that it is unsupported. I did not see the table that indicates supported platforms until today. It must be a new addition to the website.

Any time frame as to when it will be supported?

Especially, since the normal Rocket M2 is fully supported and, rumor has it that the Rocket Ti's tend to overheat.

very interesting

last fall I bought one of those UBNT switches that can supply 24/48 volt POE. Running off the supplied 48 volt supply, it got really hot (felt hot and SMELLED hot) and started dropping connections even though I only had 1 or two things plugged into it. I returned it to the seller. I noticed that some sellers like Flytec had stopped selling it. Reading some blogs I found that these switches were initially supplied with a 24 volt wall wart and apparently they worked fine with that.

The Ti unit of course runs on 48 volts. Wonder if the power converter is the same? I would not be surprised if you could fix an overheating one by supplying it at a lower voltage ...

"Rumor " is just that and hardly a reason not to consider supporting it. I admit being new to mesh but I thought it would be more durable and less sensitive to moisture when installed.

Reading the notes below the

Reading the notes below the "platform matrix", there appears to be 3 versions of the RM2-Ti: an older firmware version, an XM version, and an XW version. How do I know which version I have. The unit was purchased recently. Should I just toss my Rocket in the bin, because the only use I would have for it would be to use it on a mesh network?

I recognize that I am ignorant compared to most of the rest of the folks on the forum. I spoke to the reseller today regarding returning my RM2-Ti and asked him what version my device was. He told me that it was likely an XW version as the XM versions are no longer available and haven't been for a while. He could be lying to me but I doubt it. Your platform matrix indicates that such a device doesn't exist. Yet according to the sales rep, the XW versions are the only ones that they currently stock.

Looking at the Ubiquiti firmware page:

We find three firmware loads for the Rocket M series: XM, XW and TI.
The XW firmware can be loaded into everything with an XW board including the Titanium (RM2-Ti, RM5-Ti).
The Ti series firmware can ONLY be loaded into a Ti unit (it is a tiny bit smaller than the XW firmware).
The XM firmware cannot he loaded into a Rocket Ti (Bullet Ti yes, but not Rocket Ti)
There is no offering of an XM series firmware for the Ti units within the last year.

But some Googling shows that in an early version (say AirOS 5.5) there was an XM load for the Titanium. It looks like there were lots of problems with it. So it was a couple of years ago. I am guessing quickly pulled off the market. I am not surprised your dealer has not heard of it.

So, if I upload the XW.v.5.5.1 firmware to the device from the Ubiquiti site, would that allow me then replace it with AREDN firmware?

Initially, i didn't realize it was an unsupported device. I ran the boot loader program and got bad/good; so I proceeded as I had with my Bullet Ti and downloaded an earlier version of the firmware (the Ti version with the RM2-Ti). When I tried to upload Aredn I received a "code 6 error" and later discovered it wasn't a supported platform.

For someone new to this there are so many platforms, versions, etc.; it is confusing.

Yeah, sorry - the XM load for the Titanium was for a (now obsolete) XM hardware board. You cannot use it on present generation XW hardware.

I agree: all the similar names and versions of Ubiquiti gear are confusing....

What a conundrum

So I thought I would buy a regular RM2, since my RM2-Ti has XW hardware and is unsupported. The problem is, according to my reseller, that for quite some time the regular RM2 is likely only available with the XW hardware. One can only check the hardware version by firing up the radio which makes it unable to be returned.

I suppose, I could risk it and buy a used one off of eBay, but I don't like that option much. Does AREDN recognize the problem related to supporting only the older models? How can I find a source for a new RM2 that will be supported? Please provide guidance or explain where I am wrong in my concern.

It is a bit of a problem right now. The issue with the XW hardware is a bug. A nasty bug, that neither the AREDN team or the Open-WRT team have been able to solve. Until that issue is worked out, Open-WRT (and AREDN) won't work on XW hardware.

I've found eBay to be a great place to purchase old Rocket M5 units along with M5 nanobridge units. For Rockets, I simply ask the seller to tell me the QA date and software version from the side of the box. I've purchased 3 that were from 2014 or earlier, and they've all worked fine. Average price for an M5 rocket is $70, and all three were new-openned box (clearly never installed based on their physical condition). For the Nanobridge M5 units, there is a WISP in Arizona that has been dumping these on eBay for $250 for a box of 5. That's 5 25DB 5GhZ point-to-point mesh nodes. So far my happy little group has purchased 10 of these and no issues.

The best thing that can happen is for the XW bug to be solved. Check out this thread to support the bounty:

The Rocket M2 does NOT come in an XW model according to Ubiquiti firmware website all 2.4GHz Rocket M2's should be XM models and supported.
