Greetings,
My Mikrotiik ac lite (RB952Ui-5ac2nD-US) was working great for months.
It was running aredn-960-d8f9320-mikrotik-rb-nor-flash-16M-ac-sysupgrade firmware.
But, I turned it on this morning at there are no port lights, no Ethernet.
I did a reset and still no Ethernet ports. (Hold reset, apply power, wait for light)
I'm guessing a hardware failure but wanted to see if anyone had an idea no how to get it working.

And, thinking ahead - if it is toast; is there a better replacement?
I had an ip phone and MotionEyeOS server ip camera server connected to it plus Internet on port 1.
And thanks you to the AREDN developers. Amazing capabilities.

Thanks,
Don KM4DC

Don,  can you connect another
Don,  can you connect another node via the dtdlink port 5?  Maybe it can be accessed over the mesh?  If so, capture the support data download. This is still the go-to.   We are seeing weirdness -- not propagating a nostname to other nodes in some circumstances.   This is under investigation.

Joe, nothing getting out of the unit
Joe,
When I connect a device to the hAP Ethernet, the link lights on the distant Ethernet connection (not the hAP) light up and the distant unit sends data to the hAP trying to connect.
I show no Ethernet packets coming from the hAP to the distant device on any hAP port.
I connected hAP port-1 to my router and the link light on the router lights up, but the router does not show the hAP is connected. (and no port light on the hAP)
No sign of life on hAP port-5 (or any other port).
I cannot find any 2.4 mesh or WiFi signals coming from the hAP radios.
When I power up the hAP,  the 5 port lights blink on and then go off.
The usr light stays on for about 15 seconds and then it goes out.
The pwr light stays illuminated.
Power-reset doesn't help. No way to connect to the hAP. No blinking lights, just pwr on.
I ordered a new hAP.

Got the new hAP - But...
So, I just got a new hAP and tried to load the AREDN software.
It just won't stick.
I get the elf file loaded OK.
I've tried 3 times to load the sysupgrade file.
The sysupgrade loads with errors about the net mask, time protocol setting, and something else OR it just comes back with the firmware is not valid.
When I reboot I'm back to the MikroTik OS and IP 192.168.88.1.
I'm using the AREDN 9.3.0 build elf and bin files. (aredn-3.19.3.0-mikrotik-vmlinux-initramfs and aredn-3.19.3.0-mikrotik-rb-nor-flash-16M-ac-sysupgrade)
The MikroTik is hAP ac Lite ID RB952Ui-5ac2nD-US (same as my broken one)
The MikroTik OS is RouterOS v6.40.9

I also tried the 1022 nightly build with no luck.

Is this a case where a new OS won't allow updates?

Suggestions welcomed.

Don,   Sometimes I "scp" the .bin file to /tmp, then telnet in and "sysupgrade -n /tmp/<the bin file name>" instead of upload in the UI.   This can show some errors.

Joe, nogo on SCP
Joe,
On my new hAP.
I tried SCP, STFP, and plain old telnet and while I could log-in with STFP and telnet, I have no write permissions and can only read the root directory.
And root only shows on other folder, Skins.

Wondering what to try next?

Thanks,

MikroTik hAP ac Lite won't load AREDN software
Greetings,
My MikroTik hAP ac Lite came with RouterOS v6.40.9 and I cannot get the AREDN software to load. (details above)
I tried loading older versions of the RouterOS and it won't load either.
Which seems to confirm a post that said the RouterOS won't downgrade below the OS that the device came with.
Just wondering if anyone else is having trouble loading AREDN on new hAPs?

on the suspected broken hap
on the suspected broken hap ac lite:   If the usr light doesn't blink shortly after power on (indicating linux is booting), then turns solid after ~30 seconds, this indicates linux is not booting.  If no changes were made to this device working with AREDN firmware, and startedt this behavior, my 1st guess would be hardware failure -- something has indeed corrupted the boot process.

On the new devices received, if you can boot it via the .elf, then please grab the support download from Administration page and upload.   this will give a view of the device.   If the support download doesn't clue in to the root cause, then a fallback option is to  mail this newer hAP ac lite to me, I'll take a look at it.   Always possible, Mikrotik made a hardware upgrade.   We did see this with a new flash chip already, and a subsequent firmware change.

Nothing is jumping out at me
Nothing is jumping out at me in the data download.  Are you able to telnet to the device when booted from the .elf?   "telnet 192.168.1.1"  user 'root' and password is 'hsmm'.   if so, what does this command show?:

root@AE6XE-haplite-qth:~# rbcfg show
boot_delay=2
boot_device=nandeth
boot_key=any
boot_protocol=bootp
booter=regular
cpu_mode=powersave
cpu_freq=0
uart_speed=115200

A bit of a guess if somehow the boot config is not doing the right thing.   this tool can change these values if they don't match mine.  Next option, if you'd like can mail to my QRZ QTH address (but not back to QTH1 until July 13th, I'm at a QTH2 right now.).  triple check the process to load the sysupgrade and possibly missing a step from successful loads in the past.

hAP telnet results

Joe,
After loading the .elf file I can telnet to the hAP OK.
Screen capture attached.

I've been doing the AREDN load side-by-side with the video just to be sure I'm not skipping something.
I also tried Downgrading the RouterOS and the OS just reverts back to the current version.
If I can't figure it out tomorrow, I'll mail the new unit to you.
Thanks,
Don, KM4DC

new hAP is finally running AREDN
Joe,
I finally got the AREDN software to load and keep running.
As my last resort,
  • I turned off Norton Security and firewall
  • Changed Ethernet adapters and usb port
  • Turned off all other network interfaces on the Windows 10 PC
  • Renamed the hAP instead of using the name of the broken hAP
  • Ran PXE as an Administrator
  • Told the hAP that I was going to smash it with a large hammer if it didn't load the AREDN OS.
And it loaded the AREDN 3.19 OS.
Thanks for your help on trying to figure this out.

Glad it's working.  Yes,
Glad it's working.  Yes, sometimes they are feisty and have to wrestle for a while to get them to submit.  Been there...

Confirming broken unit usr light
Joe,
Just confirming that, on the broken hAP ac lite, upon power up the user light turns on and quickly blinks once, stays on for about 20 seconds, and then goes off and stays off.
Thanks,
Don, KM4DC

It's not booting up AREDN
It's not booting up AREDN firmware with this light behavior. If it doesn't boot the .elf file, then best guess is a hardware failure.
