When i got approved it was about 4 hours later I got hit with many messages. So many in fact i was "WHOA! Whats all this i did not even view these topics." My default setting when that happens is to leave whatever group is spamming me like that. Luckily I found the email settings to control spam. Getting replies to topis i mark or replied in is good. Getting replies to all topics is a bit much for default new members. Food for thought.

People can control the frequency with which they receive updates. Go to your profile and select the Subscriptions tab. Then under Settings, select whether your want to receive individual posting or a digest, and how often you want to get updates (eg: every 3 hours, daily, as soon as possible)
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. How to use Subscriptions may not have been clear from the function's descriptive text.

After I made my first post, it became apparent that doing so automatically initiated "tracking" for that particular thread... which seems like a reasonable default... as long as a thread doesn't get too long winded. But if it did... I don't see how to remove myself from "tracking" that thread.

My apologies to all who were inconvenienced by the incorrect default Subscriptions setting. It has been changed so that a new user has NO subscriptions to any content type by default.

I switched my subscription to "daily digest" but I still seem to be getting 20 separate emails every day.

After selecting the option to use a daily digest, did you also change the send interval to "daily" from "as soon as possible"?
Randy
However, a note for the Drupal module maintainer for this code reads: "Setting the send interval to daily does not combine mails, it just holds them back until a day has passed and then sends a bunch of them one right after the other. "
So, it appears that you can select how often you receive updates and select what types of notifications you receive, but in no case will your selected notifications be combined into one email message.
