When looking to purchase equipment and referencing the HW Matrix notes, is there a way to know if you are buying equipment with the right version to be compatible with AREDN firmware?

If you mean XM vs XW you
If you mean XM vs XW you should generally assume that once a device comes in XW that you will only receive XW models since no further XM devices are produced after the manufacture switches the production line.

that's a good "new" rule.
that's a good "new" rule. For used... it's harder. (but, as long as you pick the right firmware file, you should be fine either way)
